An
exploration of chance, the organic shapes were derived by applying
uneven washes of gesso (primer) to the canvas followed by a thinned
wash of the base color. The resulting light and dark areas were
then emphasized through the application of thicker glazes of paint.
The symmetrical central geometric symbol serves as a contrast
to the random organic forms.
This
oil painting, Vulture, along with Scarab
and Cancer, parallels oracular or divinaton
techniques used in such methods as the I Ching. The basis of the
I Ching is to create a completely random event which can tap into
the moment and therefore reflect the current state of the world
( a worldview of interconnectedness is also required to appreciate
such processes). The application of paint to canvas in this series
alludes to this process. This exploration of randomness was continued
in a different manner in the Tetragrammaton series.
