This
magazine cover illustration for DeisnFax magazine was developed
in conjunction with the magazine's art director for their annual
trade show issue. The art director wanted to have a modern looking
design that emulated the pulp sci-fi movie posters of the fifties.
The
design originated witha series of sketches to get the overall
layout of the cover of the magazine, as well as to allow for certain
fixed elements suh as the masthead and UPC code area. Once the
basic layout was complete, detail work was done on the robot to
get his look and feel, and the remaining elements were drawn,
scanned and added. This project was drawn by hand and colored
in Adobe Photoshop, although were I to do the project today it
would be done in Adobe Illustrator as it lends it self to the
art style much more. At the time I was not as proficient in Illustrator
as I am today, hence the decision to use Photoshop.
The
illustration was developed in layers within Photoshop to allow
for repositioning of the elements for additional design work in
which the illustration was to be used. DesignFax used the modified
design in their advertising rates flyer, and an additional robot
was designed for the back cover of the promotional flyer.
