This
large scale charcoal drawing employs the overlapping shape and
ambiguous shading found in some of my other drawings as well as
oil paintings. The Incisortise series is based from a dream I
had of a large, flat turtle laying on a small grassy peninsula
edged by large boulders, which reminded me of a lower jaw.
The
drawing series was intended to have a very iconic, symbolic, even
mask-like look. I had been studying ritual mask-making in many
cultures while working on these pieces, so it is natural that
they found their way into the work I was creating during that
period, even if I was not consciously including them.
These
designs eventually led to the Tetragrammaton
oil painting series.
