This
charcoal drawing was inspired by a trip to the Cleveland Museum
of Art to visit my favorite exhibit since I was young, the Armor
Room. While still fascinated by the suits of armor, this trip
drew my attention closer, and I began a study of the patterns
in chainmail.
While
chainmail patterning is not uniform, there is an underlying structure
which is adhered to, most probably due to it functionality. Chainmail
is not only intricately woven, it is also two or more layers thick
with each layer unified, and visually appears almost impossible.
I felt the sense of ambiguous depth as well as the simultaneous
receding and advancing planes experienced while visually meditating
on the chainmail was a perfect compliment to the style of overlapping
semi-transparent shapes, used in many of my oil paintings.
The
charcoal drawing itself presented other ideas as it neared completion.
Celtic knots and patterns, Persian titling as well as rosettes
and diatoms floated to mind.
